Sachin Tendulkar on Wednesday took guard outside hotel Taj in Sector 17 holding traffic awareness signboards in one hand and helmets in another, playing a short innings that left a lasting impact on a bevy of commuters that screeched their vehicles to a halt as they spotted their hero.

The Bharat Ratna awardee breezed out of the cool and comfy environs of the five-star hotel and spent nearly 15 minutes on the road, informing residents about the importance of following traffic rules.

Wearing the Mumbai Indians jersey, the team's mentor distributed helmets to four women riders. "Everyone, especially women, should wear helmets to avoid fatal casualties. Always follow the speed limit and never violate traffic rules," suggested Tendulkar, making the day of the starry-eyed crowd that jostled to catch a glimpse of the former cricketer who was in the city to back his team to come good against Kings XI Punjab at PCA Stadium in Mohali.

"It is unbelievable that a personality like Sachin Tendulkar is addressing traffic-related issues in Chandigarh. It is one of the best moments of my life. I will never forget it," said Neelam, a city resident who gladly accepted the safety gear from the hands of the former cricketer. A woman constable was among the other three lucky ones to receive the helmets.

Sources told TOI, "The decision to rope in Tendulkar for traffic awareness programme was taken a long time back but the master blaster was contacted only on Wednesday. But he accepted the proposal without any hesitation." "For a long time, I had not attended any specific programme related to traffic awareness," Tendulkar answered, explaining his eagerness to be part of the cause.

SSP (traffic) Maneesh Chaudhary too was pleasantly surprised. "We were not sure that Sachin would accept our proposal in the first attempt. Everything was arranged in a short period."
